Powell River Breakers - Track & Field Club

Welcome to the 2024 season of the Powell River Track and Field Club! It is our hope that this information package will answer the majority of your questions and provide an understanding of what is expected from parents and athletes.

The club’s objectives are to promote, encourage and develop the widest participation and highest proficiency possible in amateur track and field.

The term “Personal Best” (PB) applies to an athlete’s best performance in a particular event. We encourage your child to participate in all the track and field events and strive for a personal best in each event.  This means that the PB is a benchmark to measure their continued improvement by always putting forth their best effort, be it in a practice or competition. Whether your child is first over the finish line or 15th, if they have achieved a personal best, they should be very proud of their accomplishments.

VOLUNTEERING

The Powell River Track and Field Club has been around for many years.  We have had some highly successful athletes accomplish their dreams and goals beginning with our club.  This has been made possible by the dedication and hard work of coaches, the club executive and parent volunteers.  In order to support the athletes, we need participation from all parents to create a successful club.  We require help in a number of areas this season such as:

  • Practices - Helping with the athletes at the events. Coaching, assisting coaches, timing, starting, raking sandpit, hurdles set-up, high jump mat set up and take-down, photographers.

  • Meets - Helping officiate an event (our club is always in charge of helping officiate something, it helps if some parents take turns in this role so the coaches can help athletes prepare for their events), helping athletes prepare/ be on time for their events, bringing meet materials (shade/rain tent, snacks, jerseys), collecting the meet package, registering athletes, etc.

  • Administrative Duties -  Club executive, website maintenance, recording volunteer hours, travel coordinator, fundraising and sponsorship

  • Coaching - We could use all the coaches we can get. It is easy to get started. We have some very experienced coaches in town that can offer training, and many resources for each event. There is no date set for a coaching course yet this year, but if there is enough interest, then we can start a discussion to bring someone in to host the course, email prtrackfield@gmail.com if you are interested in coaching. The coaching course is very good and is highly recommended. Anyone can coach after taking this course, you don't need any previous track and field or coaching experience.

TRACK MEETS:

The Club really encourages every athlete to attend some meets. Our volunteer travel coordinator will arrange travel and accommodation for the group and the chaperones. We will send you the information two weeks before every meet. The track club pays for meet registration fees and athletes now travel free on BC Ferries, if traveling with the group. If you have questions about the meets, please ask the coaches after practice or email the Club Registrar.
